TRENTHAM RACES

Fine Weather and Gay Scenes The stir of a Saturday's race meeting is always very evident in the city during the forenoon hours, and the lovely weather, combined with that extra excitement of quickened traffic and the shouts of racebook boys, gave Wellington an unusually festive appearance at the beginning of the week-end. There was that insistent note in the tram bells that speaks of desperate drivers hammering their warning to motors risking a passing in the crowded streets with an inch too little roadway to spare; or to pedestrians dashing from one pavement to the other with their calculations slightly on the manslaughter side of the scales. And the long road out to Trenthain, everyone trying to get there first, carried the holiday feeling all the way. The racecourse, at its best in the autumn, with green hills sheltering the fruitful Hutt Valley, the leaves of its trees not yet turning colour, is a picture of lawns and gardens in perfect order, a delightful setting for the “sport of kings.” The dresses on Saturday were far more generally of the winter variety than was the ease on the first day. The early morning had been slightly overcast, and even at the course the wind was fresh till after lunch. Then, however, the few summer dresses among the tweeds and furs justified the courage of their wearers, for the breeze dropped, and the warmth was of midsummer.

Checks, by the way, seem as popular as they were last season, and many of the smartest ensembles were in shepherd’s plaid tweed of different colours and sizes, though mostly brown and blue.

In the stewards’ diningroom the tables were decorated with many-col-oured asters. As usual, there was a large number of people at luncheon, for the excellence of both menu and service is well known. The guests at luncheon of the president, Mr. Eric Riddiford and Mrs. Riddiford were: The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and Mrs, Coates, the Hon. Sir Walter Camcross, Sir Henry Buckleton, Mrs. Sharpe, Misses Bertha and Jessie Forbes, Miss Sloss, Rear-Ad-miral Burges-Watson, D. 5.0., Captain G. M. Graham, Mr. L. Lefeaux, Mr. A. D. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Tringham also entertained a number of guests, among whom were Sir Charles Clifford and Mr. and Mrs. W. Cooper. After the fifth race an interesting ceremony took place in tiie bird cage, when the gold cup, the gift of Mr. H. L. Nathan, was presented to the owner of the winning horse, "Walton Park, by the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates. The group round the winner included, besides Mr. Coates and Mr. and Mrs. 11. L. Nathan, and Miss Joyce Nathan, Mrs. Coates, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Riddiford, Mrs. George Nathan, Mrs. W. E. Herbert, Mr. B. Burgess, Mr. and Mrs. R. 11. Sellers, Miss Doris Bray, the Racing Club stewards, and the jockey. Mr. Coates spoke of the appreciation felt in racing circles of the generosity and sportsmanship of Mr. Hubert Nathan in presenting this valuable trophy. The handsome gold cup was handed by Mrs. Nathan to Mr. Coates, who handed it to the owner, Mr. B. Burgess, witli congratulations. After Mr. Burgess’s short reply of thanks cheers were given for Mr. Nathan, the owner, the jockey, and the horse.
