THE RACING WORLD

OPENING DAY AT TRENTHAM Golden Hair Wins Thompson Handicap DIATOMOUS BEATS SPRINTERS Easy Win for Spiral in St. Leger Stakes \ T — ’(By “The Watcher.”) Brilliant racing featured the opening clay of the Wellington Racing Club's autumn meeting at Trentham yesterday. Conditions were extremely good, the wintry weather ot the earner days of the week giving way to bright, warm sunshine with a mild northerly breeze to cool .the atmosphere. Conditions in tact, were perfect, and the course was in first-class order and, as the times proved, very fast. c ■ i Contrary to usual experience, favourites had a very fair day, and it was particularly noticeable that the winning double oi the Thompson and Railway Handicaps were the first choices. Considering the difficulties that backers usually encounter in these two races, a double success for the favourites is most unusual. Both were won brilliantly by high-class sprinters. Golden Hair’s performance in the Thompson Handicap was outstanding.

Golden Hair’s performance Jn the Thompson Handicap was outstanding. It is not an easy race for three-year-olds to win, and none had been successful since Highland scored in 1923, and, in carrying 8.7, which was four pounds over weight-for-age, to victory, Golden Hair set a new record for thgee-year-old winners.- .

Golden Hair has always been a brilliant galloper. She belongs to the wellknown family of her owner, Mr. G.- F. Moore, being out of Lady Cavendish, herself a leading sprinter in her day. She has a number of important successes to her credit both as a two-year-old and this season. In each period she made a trip to Australia, and although she failed as a two-year-old to beat such as Hall Mark, she was successful last spring in winning the V.R.C. Oaks at Flemington. On her return to New Zealand she ran unplaced in the Great Northern Derby, but on the concluding day of the meeting scored a brilliant win in the Royal Stakes, carrying 9.7 and conceding 71b. to Diatomous. That this form is equal to the best, or is in fact better than any other form in the Dominion at the present time, was clearly demonstrated yesterday when Golden Hair won the Thompson and Diatomous a little later scored in the Railway Handicap. Diatomous is another brilli-ant sprinter who has come solid with age, and his record, at Trentham during this season is now three starts for three wins. At the January meeting he was successful in two events. In the early part of his career he had an abundance of pace but did not run on too well; however, he has now greatly improved in that respect, and there seems no reason why he should not be a good miler at least. A feature of the handicap double was the fact that Sir Charles Clifford’s representatives, Cricket Bat and Copyist, filled the position of runner-up in each race. Both ran very fine races, and were not disgraced in defeat. Cricket Bat-has always' been able to show his best form at Trentham, while Copyist also is a good performer here. An interesting race was the Pacific Handicap for two-year-olds. It was contested by several of the leading youngsters of the season, -and was won narrowly by Synagogue, one of the first of the stock of the Paladin horse Rabbi to race. Synagogue won a double here in January, but was beaten by Custodian in the Middle Park Plate at Riccarton last month. He very effectively turned the tables yesterday, although he had to be very good to win, as he was pushed solidly by Variant; however, when asked for an extra effort he responded very courageously. He is a first-class two-year-old, and looks to have a bright future. This race saw the rout of the favourites, Burnish and Canopy, who were bracketed. Apart from the fact that Canopy did not jump away too well from No. 1 position, there did

not seem any excuse for their failures, although it is possible that both may be improved by the race.

The St. Leger Stakes was not contested by a very strong field. It was won very easily by Spiral, with whom Mr. G. M. Currie had not had the best of luck this season. Spiral is a handsome colt by Limond from the imported Hnwo Drax, and he is the first winner credited to- his owner in this event, although he has bred the winner previously in Commendation, and Limond has also won through the agency of Lady Fam. Racing was very keenly contested throughout the day, although there were some decisive wins. The attendance was not particularly large, but was satisfactory for an off day. The totalizator handled £24.311/10/- (win, £11,760; place, £12.545/10/-). compared with a total of £28,994 on the opening day last 'year, which was a holiday, a decrease of £4682/10/-. Walton Park Easily. With Hazdor out of the Highweight backers went for Walton Park, and they were ou the mark, as he won decisively. He lay in the rear in the early stages, but once he made his run nothing had any chance against him. Knollmere made the pace from Heather Glow, Blacksmith, and Pango, Walton Park and Aesculus in the rear. Heather Glow and Knollmere. were the first, to enter the straight, but they were immediately challenged by Pango. Then Walton Park made his strong run and went on to win easily from I J ango. with Te Ua a good third. Heather Glow was fourth, followed by Nightguard, Blacksmith, and Aesculus. The time, 2.6}, was exceptionally fast for a highweight event, and gave the pure jumpers in the field no chan.ce. Heather Glow's rider could have done better had he been less anxious, though he vvould not have beaten the winner. Calydon Improves. Dombey, the favourite in the Trial Stakes, ran an excellent race, but continued his run'of bad luck in minor placings, for, although he looked a winner, he was cut down decisively by the second choice, Calydon. Red Rufus was left at the post, Bon Rapide leading from Dombey and Grampian. A little later the order was Bon Rapide, Windward, Whetuma, and Dombey, with Imperial Spear last. Bon Rapide led into the straight, where Dombey challenged, and just as the latter settled the leader Calydon came up on the inner and after a brief struggle ran on for a decisive win. Bon Rapide was close up third, with Grampian fourth. Imperial Spear, Windward, and Bay Area finished next in that order. Calydon won well, and is improved. Dombey’s luck is out, but he should soon reap the reward of his consistency. Spiral’s St. Leger. Spiral scored a very comfortable win in the St. Leger .Stakes, outclassing his opponents. Palm Queen set a sound pace, no doubt with the idea of suiting the stamina of her bracketed mate, Melisande, but it turned out that the best suited was Spiral, who ran past everything in the straight. Palm Queen was able to finish a trifle better than Werohia and Catalogue. Final Shot ran into the lead at the start, followed by Palm Queen, Spiral, and Werohia, Catalogue and Melisande. Passing the mile post, Palm Queen went out two lengths in front of Final Shot, with Spiral coming up. On the home turn Spiral .was moving into second, Final Shot dropping back quickly to last. Palm Queen led into the straight from Spiral, Catalogue, and Werohia. Catalogue and Werohia could not keep up the pace, and Spiral shot ahead to win very easily by three lengths from Palm Queen, who held on to beat Werohia and Catalogue, who finished on terms. The other pair, Final Shot and Melisande, were well beaten. Spiral won well and his effort looked good class, though the opposition offered was feeble at the end. Synagogue a Solid Colt.

The favourite bracket. Burnish and Canopy, in the Pacific Handicap, was well beaten. At no stage of the race

did Canopy make a flattering showing, while Burnish, sent to the outer for restlessness at the post, got away well and showed brilliant speed, but weakened badly over the final furlong, leaving Variant and Synagogue to come through and draw right away. Coronilla showed up early, but the leaders to the straight were Choral and Burnish, with Liinulus, Synagogue, and Pin Money handy, Variant. Canopy and Custodian further back; Once in line, Burnish drew out, but she was unable to keep up the pace and Synagogue came through, to be in turn challenged by Variant. This pair drew away, staging a great fight, Synagogue winning in solid style. Fin Money, who finished wide out, was only a moderate third. The others were well beaten, Canopy being fourth, followed by Custodian and Limulus. Synagogue and Variant stood out by themselves in brilliancy. It was a good performance on the part of both horses. Variant, whose preparation was interrupted a few days ago, ran remarkably well under the circumstances. Possibly Canopy did not have every chance, missing the jump-out. Limulus took the eye as speedy and likely to improve, this being his first race. Golden Hair’s Thompson. The Thompson Handicap was won brilliantly by Golden Hair. She was always fairly handy, but with Red Manfred setting a fast pace she had a fair amount to make up entering the straight. She then settled down to very resolute galloping and cut down Red Manfred, also withstanding a late .challenge by Cricket Bat, who passed Red Manfred in the last stride. , . At the start Red Manfred, Epigram, and Lordly Knight were prominent, and they were followed by Takakua, Cricket Bat, Golden Hair, Pomp and Argentic. Irish Lancer was last away. Down to the six furlongs Epigram took charge, but Red Manfred recaptured the. lead, and at the turn was two lengths in front of Takakua, with Lordly Knight handy, then Epigram, Cricket Bat and Golden Hair, Autopay last, with Miladi and Red Sun. Red Manfred drew farther out from Takakua on the turn and led him into the straight, others handy being Epigram, Golden Hair,, and Lordly Knight. Red Manfred still had charge when well into the straight, but Golden Hair began to forge ahead very solidly, and finishing well ran on for a handsome win over Cricket Bat, who finished fast to beat Red Manfred by a head for second place. Argentic was fourth, and then came Epigram, Takakua, and Irish Lancer. Golden Hair won brilliantly. Cricket Bat maintained his Trentham consistency. Red Manfred ran one of his best races, while Argentic, well up fouith, was a long way back at one stage. Autopay, who was ridden by L. G. Morris when Cadland did not start, ran a poor race, and Irish Lancer showed temper prior to the start. Epigram and Takakua had every chance. A Good Hack.

The sprint was won in very solid style by Golden Chant. Tizzy and Gay Seton led to the course proper from Pheon, Royal Amphora, Golden Chant, and Cherry Queen. Gay Seton was in the lead at the false rail, but was displaced by Royal Amphora, who was then challenged by . Cherry Queen. Royal Amphora maintained hie pace, however, and held her off. Over the-last furlong Golden Chant, who had been preparing to make a final bid. came up fast. Golden Chant and Royal Amphora fought out the finish. Golden Chant winning narrowly. Cherry Queen was a fair third, and following in a bunch were Pheon, Gay Seton, Prostration. High Grader, Normandy, Tizzy, Pladie, and Blue Boy. Both winner and runner-up proved superior to their opponents by their drawing right away near the finish. They were both successful at Trentham in January, and, as their latest performances and the time show, they are equal to running in open company. Lone Raider was the actual straight-out favourite, but he was at no time prominent. 1 lienn ran a sound race, but Cherry Queen was the only one of the others who ever looked likely. Brilliant Diatomous. Diatomous scored another brilliant victory in the Railway Handicap, although he was pushed right home by Copyist. . This pair were always prominent, in spite of the fact that Diatomous was at a slight disadvantage at the start, owing to restlessness, w’hich caused him to be put on the outside, and he was actually sidling away as the barrier rose. However. he did not lose a great deal ot ground, and he was soon in evidence with Copyist, Royal Hunting, Good Hunting, and Kerbside. Past the false rail Diatomous was hotly challenging Copyist, with Kerbside following, but the leading pair drew away. It was a. hard finish, but Diatomous sustained his run to win by half a head. Kerbside was a moderate third, with Cranford fourth, then Sanguine King, Good Hunting, Royal Hunting. anjLLack. . . Diatomous not only scored brilliantly, but solidly, and Copyist, despite obvious improvement, was unable to cope with him. The others were outclassed. Saltspray Again.

The day ended with another decisive win when Saltspray beat the field in the Silverstream Handicap. He lay fairly handy throughout the running, and. getting a good passage, came through in tnc straight to cut down the leaders. There were several changes early in the running, Rust, Sibella, then Might, being finally displaced by Grampian, who led to the straight, followed by Might. Silver Sight, Saltspray, Taitoru, and Sibella. On the home turn Taitoru lost his place, and went right back to the rear. Grampian led at the false rail, but then gave way to Might and Silver Sight., Finally Saltspray came through and ran on for a clear-cut win. Silver Sight lust managing to beat Might. Then came Purse, Drum Fire. Importance, Ruri, Grampian, and Taitoru. ' Saltspray’s win was clear-cut, and he paid a good price. Silver Sigiht and

Might were always handy, and had every chance, while Grampian failed to run on. On the other hand, two or three fancied horses, notably Taitoru and Importance, got bad runs, and looked unlucky. Semoi drew 16 at the barrier, and was never able to overcome the handicap. Details of the Racing RIMU HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, £200; second £lO, third £2O. One mile and a quarter. „,„ T - 1/1 11.
