PAINTERS’ AWARD

Dispute Before Court of Arbitration SHIP WORK PROVISIONS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, March 16. The hearing of the dispute which has arisen in connection with the painting trade was continued in the Arbitration Court this morning, when the disputed clause in the application referring to ship work provisions was considered. The dispute was between the Master Painters’ and Decorators’ Association, and the New Zealand Painters’ and Decorators’ Industrial Association of Workers. Mr. D. I. MacDonald represented the employers, and Mr. F. C. Cornwell the workers. Mr. MacDonald stated that beyond the fact that they desired that provisions relating to ship work should be included in the award, and that provisions relating to hours of work and rates of pay should be similar to other conditions wherever possible, his federation was not interested in arguing the award. In reply to a question by. Mr. Justice Frazer, Mr. Cornwell said that the Master Painters’ Federation and the employees wanted the old award, and the general alterations made by the Court for the Union Company. Mr. Norman said that they wanted a new award. The company employed many men, and they wanted to bring' them all into line.

Mr. J. Roberts, for the Watersiders’ Federation, said that the waterside workers wanted to protect casual labour engaged in the chipping, cleaning, and painting of ships. He opposed the Painters’ Union application, and said that the watersiders objected to the painters carrying out work which was not recognised in any part of the world as skilled work. Skilled painters did not perform all the work in Auckland. Men had been paid as low as 1/3 an hour. He submitted that painters should be allowed to keep to their own skilled work and that watersiders should be allowed to keep to their own work.

His Honour said that the Court would consider the matter, but would make an award before hearing applications for exemptions in other centres.
