CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS
German Club Final Evening Wednesday was a memorable evening of merrymaking for the German. Club, which held its final meeting for the year in Gamble and Creed’s building, Lainbton Quay. Over 200 persons were present. After the little coloured candles on the handsomely decorated Weihnachtsbauni (Christmas tree) had been lighted, members snug three Christmas songs, “O Tannenbaum,” “O du froehliche,” and “Stille Nacht.” The many children were then grouped to receive Father Christmas, who appeared in scarlet robes trimmed with white fur. Hie aged stoop, his long white beard, and the many presents he brought were alike greeted with delight and with the respect due to the old gentleman, who regretfully took leave of the gathering after the presents had been
distributed to the children in age groups by drawing lots. Then came a good time with games for the children. All paused to admire a fine club-swinging display. The children trooped down to supper on the second floor and had a splendidly noisy time, during which the grown-ups were provided with dance music and songs. Then, while the grown-ups’ had supper, the children had a joyous time with organised games upstairs. The evening proceeded to a happy conclusion with dancing interspersed with items and choruses and student songs.
