FEEDING OF BIRDS

Practice in Old Country GLASS PHIALS USED Information concerning the feeding of sugar-eating birds was given by Mr. LOH. Tripp in replying to a welcome extended to him on his arrival back in New Zealand after a visit to the Old Country, at a meeting of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society held last night. Mr. Tripp is president both of the society and of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies’ Association. While visiting a zoo in England, said Mr. Tripp, he had seen humming birds feeding out of glass phials, the 1 contents of which were sugar and water, or honey. He considered it would be a good idea if the same practice was adopted in New Zealand for the feeding of sugar-eating birds, particularly tuis and bellbirds. He had brought some samples of the phials back with him, and it was said that they could be made in the Dominion, In. England, continued Mr. Tripp, he met fishermen who had visited New Zealand, all of whom had spoken well of their reception here and the assistance that had been given to them by the secretaries of societies and also by members of the council and rangers. One fisherman had asked him if it would not be possible for visitors to get information concerning the fishing in the various districts. During his visit to the Dominion he had gone to Waimarino, but when he had arrived there he had been informed that for some reason the fishing was not good. He thought that arrangements might be made for societies to send information to one another, so that details of the current season’s fishing might be obtained by visitors. . <■
