COMMUNISTS ACTIVE
Obtaining Hold in China “Things go from bad to worse,”, writes the Rev. Mr. Glanville, of the China Inland Mission, under date October 80 to a friend in his home town, Christchurch. ‘The Communists,” he states, "have swept into Eastern Szechuan from the northern province of Shensi, and have practically carried all before them right down to langtse .at Wanhsien, an Important river port midway between Ichang and Chungking. They have also set up their Soviet government, and there is little prospect at present of their being unseated. “This has dealt a serious blow to the Church of England section of our work. Most of the missionaries have had to flee to Chungking for refuge, leaving their worldly possessions behind. Mission premises have been despoiled and the Christians scattered. The Paonlng .cathedral, hospital, and theological college are all involved. It Is sad business for the Chinese, for numbers have met with death, as they receive no quarter from the Reds. Then the province of Kiangs! has for a long time been under Soviet rule, and Kiang-kai Shek is at present engaged in a drive against the Red element, but I fear that it is almost a hopeless situation, as Communism has got such a bold on so many of the people.”
