HAWKE’S BAY DOINGS

The annual sports day of Queenswood School, Hastings, was held in Cornwall Park. The weather was lovely, and the principal, Miss Rixon, received a large number of guests. Mrs. J. J. Faulkner made a sho'rt speech of congratulation to the winners of the events, and Mrs. Ernest Groome presented the prizes, after which afternoon tea was served In the pavilion. Messrs. J. J. Faulkner. John Kelsey, and J. St: J. Hindmarsh directed the sports. The trustees, jcommittee members and friends of the Hawke’s Bay Children's Homo. Napier, were Invited by Miss Mountford to an evening party in the Girls' Home dining hall. The visitors were entertained with songs by the girls under the leadership of Mr. Charles. Douglas, and country dancing, for which they had been trained by Miss Alix Rochfort, Miss Rosemary Hunter, and Miss Ursula Greenwood. Dr. and Mrs. Crompton gave a country dance party at their home on the Havelock North hills recently, for the young friends of their family. Dancing on the lawn was organised by the Misses Nancy. Joan, Katherine and Margery Crompton, to music played by Mrs. Leedom, and proved a very delightful form of entertainment. The Hawke's Bay Little Theatre scored another success with its production of St. John Ervine’s play. “Mary-Mary Quite Contrary,” in the Hastings Municipal Theatre. A large and appreciative audience followed the play with unabated interest frprn beginning to end. Those taking part were Mrs. John Gatenby, Mrs. Seeker. Miss Alix Rochfort, Miss Geraldine Miller, Miss Nellie Waugh. Messrs. Russell Moss, Gerald Faulkner, Bayliss, ‘Hugh Baird, and A. B. Maxwell. Mem-bers-of the Napier Repertory Society were among the audience, in which both town and country were well represented. The nursing staff of the tVaipukurau Hospital honoured the seven finalists who had sat for their state examination by a dance. A Napier orchestra supplied the music, and a savoury supper. prepared by the nurses themselves, was served. Miss Turnbull, the matron of the Hospital, acted as hostess.
