Because there has beeu no diminution In the number of grey duck in Canterbury, and particularly on Lake Ellesmere, it is unlikely that Canterbury sportsmen will fall in with the suggestion of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society that the Department of Internal Affairs should be urged to declare a close season for the birds next year. In the Auckland district there has been a considerable diminution in the number of birds, but it is stated that in Canterbury they are as plentiful as ever they have been, while swans are probably more numerous tbau at any time in the past. Not omy were the bags of grey duck fairly small last season, but also more sportsmen went after swans than tisirnl. with the result that, the ducks escaped lightly and are likely to be very plentiful next season.
