MEAT IMPORTS

Strong British Propaganda for Restriction SOME ALARM CAUSED London, December 11. Dominion meat circles are alarmed at the strength of the propaganda for a restriction of meat imports. It is now fairly clear that Britain wilt endeavour further to restrict imports after June 30. The Australian High Commissioner, Mr.. S. M. Bruce, has not yet been officially approached. A prominent meat authority said that better prices, such as a strong meat board in Britain would ensure, would more than offset its small cost. The absence of such a board is responsible for Australian meat selling at 2d per lb below New Zealand. Other authorities declare that it is unfair to blame Dominion imports for the weakness of the market. The truth is that English growers themselves are breeding so much rubbish that the prices of good quality beef have been pulled down in sympathy. A further factor unsettling the market Is the arrival of Canadian live cattle, 1500 of which have just landed in England, many ready for killing. OXFORD’S DEMAND Campaign for English Beef 1 London, December 11. The “News-Chronicle” says that Oxford colleges ,are calling for measures to force the public to buy English beef, pointing, out that they will be forced to buy it in the absence of an alternative. The paper adds that the colleges discreetly leave the alternative nameless. ■ The “Daily .Mail,” also discussing the communication from the| Oxford bursars, says that the curtailment-.of the supplies of beef involves difficulties with certain Dominions and Argentina, but action must be taken. as quickly as possible. > . .
