BOWLING CENTRE

Poor Tournament Entries

TIME EXTENDED The final meeting for the year of the Wellington Bowling Centre was held last evening. In the absence of the president (Mr. W. Perry), Mr. H. Mayer occupied the chair. The treasurer, Mr. J. Kershaw, reported a credit balance of £B6/0/6. The secretary, Mr. L. McNabb, reporter] that there was a balance of £l2 as the result of the carnival pairs, and a motion was passed that the sum be forwarded to the carnival committee. The secretary reported that there were only 34 entries for the rink tournament at Christmas. This represented only 11 clubs. As this entry was rather low, it was deci'lc* to extend the date of nomination until Friday at 10 a.m. In the meantime an appeal is to be made to the clubs to furnish another six rinks. It was stated that the Newtown club had not sent in any entries, as the members considered the. entry fees to be too high. Choice of Greens.

Speaking on the .choice of greens for the tournament, Mr. J. Kershaw said that they should follow the principle laid down last year, that uo one green should be played on for more than one day. The selection of greens was left tn the tournament committee. It was agreed that the final game be played on the Wellington club's green. Only 20 entries were received for the New Year pairs. As the entry was considered disappointing it was decided io extend the date of entry until Friday next, and that a special effort be made to get another 10 rinks if possible. It was stated that the pairs should be played with three bowls instead of the usual four. : / . Mr. Jones'(Woburn) called attention to the fact that players in the carnival pairs should have been members of the same club. It had placed the umpire in a peculiar position. How was he to know when he was to act if the rule was ignored? ' Mr. L. McNabb, secretary, mentioned that the matter had' arisen at a meeting prior to the tournament, but as the tournament was for a charity it was decided to let the entrv stand. ’ That explanation was considered satisfactory by the delegates, but the rule is to. be enforced in the case of the New Year pairs. Barnett “Tiki” Games.

Some discussion on the Barnett “tiki’’ match with the Christchurch centre took place. One suggestion was that the match should be abandoned. Another proposal was that it should be played only once in two years, when the annual tournament was being held either in Wellington or Christchurch.' The chairman said he would prefer that there was’ no definite motion. He would like to see an effort made to fulfil the engagement this season, and that the matter of future meetings be discussed with the Christchurch centre when they met. On the motion of . Mr. W. Pawson it was decided to vote a bonus of £lO to the secretary as some recognition of the extra work he had been given. In mak; ing the announcement, the chairman sai'i he only regretted the amount, was not double, as they a.ll.'.recognised that the salary was insufficient.
