REGULAR OVERHAUL

Patent Fire Extinguishers

CITY BRIGADE’S SERVICE

A row of patent fire extinguishers laid out in the yard of the Central Fire Brigade Station yesterday was evidence of an activity of the brigade that is of vital service to tbe business community. A daily task undertaken by the Wellington brigade is the overhaul of these extinguishers for the business, commercial, professional and other members of the community for a modest annual fee. The brigade authorities say that only too often people who are induced to furnish these extinguishers, especially in the case of new buildings, as a safeguard against fire, are negligent in overhauling them, with tbe result that at times they are not effective when there is an outbreak of fire. Rust sets in, mostly round the edge of the crown, and sometimes eats right through, allowing tlie gas to escape little by little. These extinguishers, which are effective when kept in order, should be examined, cleaned up, repainted, and tested for pressure from time to time, so that they may do their work if and when required.
