CHRISTMAS “DRIVE”

Appeal in Upper Hutt Stressing the point that no other appeal has been authorised, the mayor of Upper Hutt. Mr. A. J. McCurdy, as chairman of the local unemployment committee, is circulating a preliminary notice of a Christmas “drive” which is to be held on December 9. In his appeal, Mr. McCurdy points out that the maximum Government allocution for married men with one or two children has been reduced from 37/6 to 26/4 this year, and married men’with three or more children have been reduced from 50/- to 39/6. This is under the system of three weeks’ relief pay and nothing every fourth week. Residents in the district on the Upper Hutt side of the Silverstream railway bridge are therefore asked to contribute as liberally as possible when the "drive” takes place.
