Shipping Officer Retires MR. Al. RUDD, AUCKLAND’ Dominion Special Service. ■ Auckland, December 1. After 47 years’ service with the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr. M. Rudd, assistant manager at the Auckland office for the last 22 years, has retired owing to ill-health. When Mr. Rudd joined the company in 1886, its fleet numbered 32 vessels, the largest being the Mararoa, and the total tonnage was 33,863 tons. None of those vessels is'now afloat. During his years of service he has seen the company’s fleet grow to a total of 55 vessels, with an aggregate tonnage of 187,294 tons. Mr. Rudd entered the company’s service as a junior clerk in the Christchurch office, and, after 13 years there, was appointed secretary to Sir Charles Holdsworth, who w;is then general manager of the company, the headquarters of which were in Dunedin. Four years later he was appointed submanager at Lyttelton, and, after four years at that branch, was transferred to Auckland in 1911 to the position which he held until his retirement. He is well-known in shipping circles throughout the Dominion, and during recent years he has on occasions acted as. relieving manager at Nelson, Westport, i and Christchurch.
