Committee Chairmen Fined
DUNEDIN QUEEN CARNIVAL
By Telegraph.—Press Association Dunedin, October 13.
As a sequel to a queen carnival, in which articles were raffled to raise funds, four chairmen of various committees appeared voluntarily in the Police Court to-day to answer charges of establishing a lottery by which prizes were gained by a mode of chance. The magistrate indicated that he had every sympathy with the objects of the campaign, the raising of funds for the relief of distress, but it would be improper for him not to enter a conviction. Three of the defendants were each fined 20/- and costs. A conviction only was entered against the fourth, but bn a charge of selling liquor at a dance he was fined 20/-.
The dance was also promoted to assist the carnival funds.
