LAWYERS PROTEST
Conduct of German Trial
UNFAIR TO DEFENDANTS
Berlin, October 12.
At the resumption of the Reichstag fire trial five American, Bulgarian and French lawyers attending the trial protested to the president of the court against the exclusion of DimitrolT. It was emphasised that Popoff and Taneff understood little or no German, while the proceedings; strangely, were not translated, and none of the foreign defendants was represented by a lawyer of his own choosing. Consequently Dimitroff was both defendant and lawyer, and his lack of knowledge of German procedure brought him into conflict with the court. Dimitroff’s exclusion, it was contended, meant that he did not receive a fair trial. If the Bulgarians were found guilty, it would be impossible to convince the world of the objectivity and impartiality of German justice.
