BIGGEST TREK SINCE EGYPT

Jewish Exodus from Germany

A gigantic scheme for the greatest Jewish exodus since the days of the Pharaohs is being worked out to remove 250,000 Jews out of Germany and free them from the Nazi terror.

Nothing on quite such a colossal scale as this has been conceived in modern times, for it will be an exodus not only of peasants, artisans and tradesmen, but of professors, doctors, bankers and scientists. At least 100,000 of these will be settled in Palestine, which is destined under the plan being worked out to become a vast new agricultural, industrial, and cultural country peopled by refugees from Germany, who will bring with them some of the finest brains in the world.

The full details of the scheme are not yet complete, but the “Sunday Chronicle” states that the first steps will be taken to put it into operation shortly. A world-wide appeal to Jewry is likely to be made, and arrangements put in band for raising a loan of at least £2,000.000 over 10 or 20 years in order to finance the scheme..

A prominent Jewish leader in London said that there was no question of providing a temporary haven for persecuted Jews. “We realise,” he said, “that Germany will never be safe for our people again—or at least for five or six generations. We must find a new home. At the present time the population of Palestine is approximately 800,000, and there is no room for a quarter of a million more. “By the proper selection of emigrants. however, we can turn Palestine into one of the most important units under the British flag.”

■Vast potentialities for development are contained in the country round

Haifa, and it is proposed to start a large number of new industries in this region, one of the first and most important will be transport. It is proposed in the Huleh region in the north to drain vast tracts of swamp land and plant cotton. Tlie ground has already been carefully surveyed, and experts state that when drained it will be one of the most fertile regions in the world in which grain of all kinds could be grown. The plan provides for agriculture nt Emek and the Vale of Jezreel. where thousands of German Jewish peasants could be found a home either on collectivised farms or on small holdings of their own. The new industrial centre at Haifa would supply these districts with implements and tools and also link up with the proposed new bromide and potash industries along the borders cf the Dead Sea. Small factories have been working here for some years, but there is still a vast field for development if sufficient capital can be found, for the region Is rich in high-grade fertilisers. The demand for the small output already available from the Dead Sea areas is greater than tlie small factories can possibly supply. A proposal is being entertained for the enriching of the University at Mount Scopus by numbers of GermanJewisb doctors, chemists, and scientists for whom there is no security or status at present under Nazi rule. It is proposed to found a faculty of medicine, and some of the finest scientific brains in the world will he brought to Palestine, where laboratories may later be established to deal with the industrial problems whicT will arise in a rapidly expanding country.
