Millionaire Who Crashed

Samuel Tnsull, the Chicago financier, is detained by the Greek authorities on request by the American Legation at Athens.

It is understood that the charge against him Is that he has violated the bankruptcy laws. And so another dramatic chapter has opened in the remarkable life of this old man of 73, who was born in London.

Once worth £20.000.000 he has been hunted half-across the world by relentless United States law officers who sought his return to America. Once living in luxury, he has been a fugitive without a home, having to seek sanctuary in a foreign country, following the failure of the huge corporation he had built up in the States. Alone and ill, practically friendless and without a home, he went to Greece.

Even here last year he was not. left in peace. The American authorities sought his extradition, but the application failed.

Instill lost his own fortune in the debacle. His wife, a charming woman, lost her fortune. His brother lost everything also. When, in Greece, he found that he was not to be extradited, and that the American authorities had (failed to secure his return to the States, he bought he would be able to live his remaining days m peace if not in affluence.

Insult's early life was a phenomenal romance. When he was 22 he went to America to seek his fortune. He became secretary to Edison, the famous Inventor, and later built up a business with huge ramifications until he was the head of a £500,000,000 utility combine. Then came the crash. His - palace at Lake Chicago, his country estate of thousands of acres in Illinois, his score of clubs in Chicago, New York, Canada and London, and all the outward indications of his luxury had to go.

Now he is an old man again, tir.ed, in ill-health, hunted and disillusioned.
