ANNUAL CONVENTION

W.C.T.U.
The convention of the W.C.T.U., .Wellington District, met this year at Brooklyn, and was welcomed by Mrs. Brewer, the local president. Mrs. Lopdell, of Lower Hutt, returned thanks for the hospitality of Brooklyn ladles. Miss Kirk, J.P., presided over the gathering, welcoming delegates and conducting the business. All the officebearers were re-elected as follow: — President, Miss C. G. Kirk, J.P.; vicepresident, Mrs. Lopdell; treasurer. Miss Mildenhall; recording secretary, Mrs. Tanner; corresponding secretary, Mrs. Wood.
Delegates to the National Council of Women and to the League of Nations Union were also appointed. The treasurer reported quite a successful year, with about £2O expenditure, and a balance of £2.
Reports were handed in from eleven local branches, and all told of increased membership and widening activities. Gifts for Headquarters Fund, amounting to over £l2, were handed in to Mrs. Peryman, president of Headquarters Committee. Various resolutions were passed; (1) against any increase in time allowed for the open bar; (2) supporting the Bill concerning nationality of New Zealand women, who marry aliens; (3) asking for regulation of drinking at pubic dances; and (4) protesting against the estabishment of a State lottery. Arrangements were made for holding a shop day in Wellington on Friday, November 3, the proceeds to go ■ toward District Union funds, in preparation for the Dominion Jubilee Convention in March, 1934. In t_is connection, Mrs. Peryman reported having visited the Wairarapa Unions and having received offers of help from them for the shop. Mrs. Peryman also stated that the suggestion had been made that there be a bazaar held'in Wellington in March, 1934, at the time of the Jubilee Convention.
An interesting visitor to the Convention was Mrs. Forrester-Paton, of Alloa, Scotland, tfho gave one of her few afternoons in Wellington to visiting the meeting. She has been president of the British Women’s Temperance Association in Scotland and brought a greeting from that body. She gave a very interesting address on conditions among women in Britain, and pleaded that women in New Zealand should unite with them especially in working for peace. Miss Kirk suitably welcomed the visitor, and Sirs. Chisholm had prepared for her a ‘beautiful bouquet of sweet peas. The hall was decorated with lovely flowers, and Miss Kirk was presented with a bouquet of white irises, tied with the -appropriate 'white ribbon bow. Delightful entertainment was presented by Mrs. Stimson, who gave two recitations, and Mesdames Soal. Udy and Miss Turner, who contributed songs.
