TROTTING PROSPECTS

Waikato, S. Canterbury

A REVIEW OF FORM

(By

"Overcheck.”)

The meeting of the Waikato club, which is being held to-day, promises to provide some interesting racing, and the form displayed should be helpful in considering the prospects of the horses engaged at the forthcoming meeting at Auckland. There are also two races at South Canterbury, each of which has filled well and should materially assist , in making the meeting a successful one.

Waikato.

INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP. of 90 sovs. Class 3.50. One mile and a half.

The four horses that will probably be accorded most support in the Introductory Handicap are Manna’s Son, Gala Day, Young Rodney, and Kilim. Young Rodney and Manna’s Son finished second and third respectively to Mountain bun at Auckland in August, and both should have improved since then. Kuini won one race and was twice second out ot four starts last year, but she will have her work cut out to overhaul the three first-named, of whom Young_ Rodney and Manna's Son may be the elect of backers. . / •

FRANKTON HANDICAP, of 90 sovs. Class 3.(1. One mile and a quarter.

Of the scratch division in the Frankton Handicap', Ringtrue should be popular. He is a three-year-old and at his first attempt in August ran third to Bonnie Direct and Jester, recording 2.07 1-5 from 3.6. Pelting has done little racing, but was returned a winner at Hawke's Bay in June last. Of the three on 36 yards Bingen Chief, if he goes away at all decently, should do well. It will be 'remembered that he finished with a great burst of speed at M ellington when he ran second to Agile. Form points to Bingen Chief and Ringtrue running well.

MARK MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. Class 4.33. Two miles. Dan Direct .. ecr Tactless ... -4 Meteor .... scr Lewpies Guy 4S Prince Pedro 12 Peter Pirate . 60 Great Parrish 21

In the Mark Memorial. Melcor will no doubt be preferred to Dan Direct. It is now some time since he won over two miles, but in November, 1931, he won at Addington in 4.28 3-a from a 4.33 mark, so he has demonstrated his ability to cover the distance. Great Parrish is a better horse than Prince Pedro, though at times he has raced disappointingly at two miles. In August he ran second to Peter Pirate over two - miles, and later in the day won at 10 furlongs. Tactless was twice second over two miles at Addington in August, going 4.28 on the secfind occasion. Kewpies Guy has not yet raced up to her early promise, while Peter Pirate is on a pretty tight mark for him. Meteor, Great Parrish, and Tactless should play a prominent part over the final furlong.

CLAUDELANDS HANDICAP, of 120 sovs. Class 3 29. One mile and a halt. Tempo scr SmOoger . .... 1W'lllle Derby scr Pukemlro •••• g? Wee Machine scr Richore ... 24 Gold Hairst . ■ 12 Capilano .. 48 Rock Hinton 12 .Our Peter .. 48 Tempo and Willie Derby have done most of their racing in the South, where each met with a fair measure of success. Willie Derby has a placed performance of 3.19 4-5, and if he can be induced to run up to that form he should hold a good chance. He is a bit doubtful, however, and on this account many will pass him by in favour of Wee Machine and Guid Hairst. The latter defeated Silver Bingen, 'by half a head at .Auckland in August, but was placed second for boring. Smooger, Pukemiro and Capilano have claims to consideration. The latter is usually a very smart beginner.. and she will probably make up a good bit of her handicap before the others get down to business. On the whole, the chances of Guid Hairst, Smooger and Capilano may be preferred.

x -juyius - - Axworthy scr Bed Hope .. ou Bonnie Direct and Bingen Chief make the strongest appeal of those on scratch, while of the remainder it is pretty certain that Chancellor and Red Hope will 'be in most demand. Chancellor, it will be remembered, ran third to 11 ar Buoy and Village Guy in the N.Z. Sapling Stakes at Ashburton in June, registering 3.22. Red Hope won comfortably at Auckland in August in 3.29 4-5 and notwrthstauding a rehandicap of 36 yards, may be expected to jpufi up a stout race. Chancellor, Bingen Chief and Bonnie Direct should race prominently.

HAMILTON HANDICAP, of 130 sovs. ' Class 3.35. One mile and a half. Billy Carbine scr'' Dark Parrish Belle 13 McKinney 48 Moko Bells .. 24

The field is disappointingly small in the Hamilton Handicap, in which Parrish Belle and Moko Bells are likely to receive most support.

PRESIDENTS’ HANDICAP, of 130 sots. . Class 2.47. One mile-and a-quartcr. Dan Direct .. scr Peter Pirate . 12 Meteor .... scr Great Parrish 24 Nglngonglngo scr Enawali .... 60 Te Wahla ... acr In the President’s Handicap Meteor, Ngfngongingo, Peter Pirate and Great Parrish are a likely quartette. With a start of 12 yards Peter Pirate may account for Great Parrish, but in the two southerners he will meet two very useful horses who may prove his master. Enawah is good, but 2.42 is a hard mark to win from. VISITORS’ HANDICAP, of 110 sots. Class 2.57. One mile and a quarter. Donum .... scr Guid Hairst 60 Mythorpe .. see Hohoro Mazda scr Pukemiro .... <- Wee Machine ..48 After the manner in which he won at the IHutt Park, solid support will be accorded Donum in the Visitors’ Handicap. Mazda has 2.48 against her over ten furlongs, and so has several seconds in hand. It is not often that winners come from further back than 48 yards,, and so the three accorded most support when the machine closes may be found to be Donum, Mazda and Wee Machine. South Canterbury.

The two following events are included in to-day’s programme of the South Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting:—

Horses that should run prominently are: —

Wasbd.vke Handicap.—Vanity Fair, Ivan de Oro, and Real Burton. Hadlow Handicap.—Blandford, General Sarsfield, and Atralette. Wellington Meeting.

Owners are reminded that nominations for the meeting of the Wellington club, to be held on October 2S, close with the secretary, Mr. W. I’ere, P.O. Box 4, Petone, on Monday next, October 16. This meeting is now generally known as the Cup Trial meeting, and the programme which has been drawn up for it should attract splendid entries. The Cup Trial affords the last opportunity owners will have of giving their Cup candidates an outing in public before tho big race at Addington, and no doubt there will be a generous response on their part.
