Housing and Finance
Sir, —Mr. J. G. Harcourt struck the keynote of the trouble when stating that finance was the reason why private dwellings had not been erected. There are many would-be settlers who would like to build but cannot afford to pay 6J and 7 per cent, interest for money tb-day, and I would like to ask if it is not possible for the State Advances Department to open its doors just a little way. This would create confidence and work. I refer to the good old system of “Advances to Settlers,” which was always a sound proposition. Hoping some abler pen than mine will help the would-be settlers of to-day.—l am, etc.,
VANE OPTIMIST. Wellington, October 12.
