Killing of a Whale (From "The Dominion,” October 13, 1908.) The Pictoji “Press” reports that a right whale wap sighted on Thursday morning by Mr. James' Norton, from the Flat Rock at the Queen Charlotte Sound Heads. Two boats were quickly manned by Messrs. Jackson and Norton, who rowed out to the heads and waited for the whale to come in with the tide. At an opportune moment the. harpoon was hurled into the body of the monster, and it was spouting blood within two or three minutes. It made desperate efforts to escape, but once the man with the lance got to work, its struggles gradually became weaker, and about two hours later it was quite dead. The “kill.” which took place near Okukuri. was witnessed by practically every resident of Te Awaiti. The estimated value of the whale is about £3OO.
The Gordon Bennett international balloon race started from Berlin yesterday. There were 23 balloons, carrying three days’ provisions.
A huge crowd held a demonstration before the Crown Prince’s! palace at Belgrade. ' The Prince, addressing the multitude, said: “I share your feelings. I hope that a few days hence we will be able to give our lives for King and Fatherland.” This utterance was received with frantic cheers. Professor Johnnovich, a leading agitator in fawir of war, was elected president of the Skuptachina. The latter held a secret sitting, and by 93 to 66 votes, decided against war.
A conference of the executives of the spinners and the card-room hands in Lancashire decided to accept the five per cent, reduction of wages at an early date, and to review the whole position three months later. The Masters’ Federation will meet to-day. It is expected that the lock-out will now terminate.
