BATTLE OF FLOWERS

Arrangements Discussed

DATE AND ROUTE

Representatives of florists and horticultural societies met last evening to discuss preliminary arrangements for the floral procession and “Battle of .Flowers,” in the forthcoming Confidence Carnival. Mr. H. Amos, the organiser of the carnival, briefly reviewed the list of attractions for the carnival, drawing special attention to the “Battle of Flowers.” Wellington, he said, bad never witnessed a "Battle of Flowers,” except on the screen. Mr. B. Shell, who organised a similar battle in Melbourne recently, outlined the suggested plan of campaign. In Melbourne, he said, the battle was conducted with rose petals. He did not want it to be thought that growers should destroy their blooms for the sake of getting petals. The petals used in Melbourne were mostly from full-blown blooms. The battle, he continued, would take place on a section of the route, yet to be determined. He, personally, favoured a route which was flanked by high buildings. . The question of whether there would be a sufficient quantity of rose petals available toward .the end'of November was discussed, it being stated that the time was most opportune.

it was decided to make a recommendation to the executive committee that prizes be offered for decorated private cars in the floral procession. The route suggested and decided upon was from the Government Buildings, along Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Manners Street, Courtenay Place, and Kent Terraco, to the Basin Reserve. This Is subject to the approval of the City Council. A suggestion that there be a children’s section was supported and agreed upon. Prizes will be given in this section.

It was stated that the procession would be headed by a float on which would be seated a “Queen of Flowers” and her attendants.

The date for the floral procession and the battle was fixed for Saturday, November 25.
