VANDALISM IN BUSH
Prosecutions if Caught
WATER BOARD’S ACTION
Stating that vandalism was prevalent in the areas of bush in charge of the board. Mr. H. A. Huggins, who presided at the meeting of the Wellington City and Suburban Water Board yesterday, declared that the Board would do all in its power to prevent it, and would pr. eeute those who were caught taking flowers, ferns and shrubs away on the backs of their cars. There was no object In taking the flowers as they would not last the day. Motorists also took medium-sized trees and shrubs, and while It was nice to have them in the gardens the public should get them from the nurseries. The bush must be left alone, and honorary rangers should use all their powers to see it was. Mr A. N. Perham, forestry officer, told the Board that the difficulty was that there was so much private property and it was hard to catch people in the act. The damage mostly occurred on Sundays about Campbell’s Mill and on about four miles of road to the top of the Akatarawa. , Mr. W. V. Dyer (Hutt County): Mostly Wellington citizens I suppose? Mr. Huggins: I don’t admit that.
Mr. Dyer intimated that he was sure the Hutt County and its officers would co-operate with the Board in endeavouring to stop damage to the bush. The county overseer was on the road a good deal and would be glad to assist
