ON AUCKLAND TRACKS

Preparing’ for Avondale

INTERESTING GALLOPS

Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 12.

Some interesting gallops in preparation for tlie Avondale Jockey Club's meeting were recorded on the tracks at Ellerslie, Avondale, and Takanini this morning, when the going at the various centres was fast. At Ellerslie the galloping was accomplished on the course proper, where the poles were 30 feet out, and Chief Cook (Wiggins) registered the best effort in easily defeating Baroscope and Jewelled Girdle over five furlongs in Imin. 2 2-ssec., the first wo being covered in 24sec. Chief Cook finished up bis work attractively, and he has advanced in favour for tbe Flying Stakes Handicap as the result of the gallop. Jewelled Girdle, although about four lengths behind, went very satisfactorily for a novice, and he is a possibility in the Maiden Plate. Carfex, with a ligljt boy in the saddle, was far too good for Catoma (Wiggins) over a round in 2min. 6sec., Catoma taking 2min. 7 3-ssec. Carfex would have run much better time with something to keep him going over the last few furlongs, and he is in great heart. Whenuakura went very nicely while running half a mile along tlie back in 50sec., the first two taking 24sec. Sporting Song went with him, but had to be hard ridden to keep close. Whenuakura has thrived well since winning at Foxton, and his Avondale prospects appear very rosy. Unless present intentions are changed, he will be to Trentham for the Wellesley Stakes after the first day at Avondale. Another pair of two-year-olds, Seven Seas and Red Flame, sprinted three furlongs along the back in 37sec., the first two in 23 4-ssec. Seven Seas shows promise.

King March, who has been sore, worked over a round on the tan in Imin. 55sec., finishing ahead of Prince Colossus, who assisted him over the last three furlongs, covered in 42sec. It was a solid gallop, ns there is a lot of fresh tan on the track at present. King March is thoroughly Ct, apart from his soreness, which may not be severe enough to affect him seriously. However, the course at Avondale is firm, and he is one who would appreciate an easing of the going. Other horses who worked well at Ellerslie were Bay Broncy, Hushing. Supreme Ruler, Lord Vai, Gay Marigold, and Gay Rose. Gay Broney and Supreme ■ Ruler should be capable of solid efforts 'in the minor events they arc to contest on Saturday. On the course proper at Avondale, where the trestles were out about GO feet, All Humbug and Red Sun covered a mile in 1.47 3-ssec. There was little between them at. the finish, All Humbug appearing to be going a shade tbe easier. Diatomous dashed over five furlongs in 1.3 4-ssee. He finished on strongly and ■ gained, many admirers for tbe Flying Stakes Handicap. After being iu behind until reachiug the straight, Delrain was alongside Grand Sport at the end of six furlongs in 1.17 3-s.se c.

Ornamental and Cape Fair covered seven furlongs in 1.34, both working well. C. Findlay stated to-day that he has decided to run Oimamental in the Highweight Handicap' on Saturday ip preference to the : Avondale ' Cup, with J. McRae in the saddle. She should be very' hard to beat.

Pomard and Sporting Blood, a two-year-old from Gisborne, were well clear of Lady Burleigh at the end of half a mile in 51 l-seec. Pomard showed the most speed, but Sporting Blood hung on well. Palm Queen easily beat Quietly and Camilla Horn over five furlongs in 1.5.

Hampton Park registered the best half-, mile of the morning by running 49 4-ssec.. He is ready to run a good race.on Saturday, but may be all the better, for.a. run., The middle grass, was in. use at,Takanini, and took-the.honours by dashing over.five furlongs in 1.1 4-ssec.' She is very well, and. her prospects in the Champion Plate appear very rosy. Tatyoon went solidly in beating Expectancy and Nicodemus oyer six furlongs In 1.17 3-s>sec. , He should be one of the hardest to bent in the Highweight Handicap. .. : ■, ’ ' ' ’ "

Gay Blonde was a neck in front of Nun Nicer at the end of three ■ furlongs in 36 4-ssec. She is an improving filly who may be Whenuakura’s most formidable opponent ’in' the Avondale Stakes. Cherry King, with Tavern Knight to assist over the last five.- galloped seven furlongs in 1.29 2-ssec. The last five furlongs were run in 1.4 l-ssec.', and Tavern Knight just had his head in front. Cherry King has done well since racing at Wanganui, a.nd should soon show further form.

The latest arrivals include General Quex, Bold Bid and Merry Way.

DIATOMOUS GOES WELL

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, October 12.

A heavy fog covered the Avondale course this morning, but it soon lifted. Most of the fast training work was done on the course proper, about 60 feet out from the rails. The going was good. All Humbug and Red Sun covered a mile in lmin. 47sec., the last five furlongs in lmin. 7sec. The former was a shade ahead at the finish. Diatomous ran five furlongs in lmin. 3 4-ssec., and went well. Delrain and Grand Sport jumped away at the six furlongs, the latter leading till on the turn, where Delrain ran to the front and won the trial in lmin. 17 3-5 sec. The first two furlongs were run in 25scc.

Ornamental and Cape Fair ran seven furlongs in lmin. 3-lsec., the first three in 39 3-ssec.

Pomard and Sporting Blood were almost level, clear of Lady Burleigh, after running half a mile in 51 l-ssec. Pomard went well, but Sporting Blood impressed by his tenacity at the finish. Palm Queen beat Quietly and Camella Horn over half a mile in 50sec. The firstnamed went exceptionally well. Hampton Park ran the fastest half of the morning in 49 4-ssec. Considering hv was wide out it was an excellent effort.
