NEW CITY THEATRE
Commencement of Work
A start was made yesterday with the alteration work in connection with the new State Theatre in Courtenay Place. The work of adapting the existing buildings In Courtenay Place and Tory Street is considerable. In order to take full advantage of the width of the entrance block In Courtenay Place, the whole of the western wall of the garage Is to be demolished and a new wall and side wings have to be erected in alignment with the entrance block. The garage block itself has also to be strengthened throughout by the insertion of stout concrete piers. There is no shortage of labour. Some hundreds of men —carpenters, bricklayers, labourers, and painters—have made application for employment, but for some days to come only a few can be' employed. More men will be taken on as work progresses.
