A permit was granted by the Wellington City Council last night for additions to the skating rink in Wakefield Street for the purpose of converting it into tin ice-skating , rink.

An Order-in-Council in the Gazette authorises the Wellington Fire Board to raise a loan of £25.000 for the purchase of the Clyde Quay School site as a central fire station. The term of the loan is for 20 years, and interest is limited to 4 per cent.

The fees received from the city abattoirs for the month of August were £844, a decrease of £5O on the preceding month, but an increase of £95 on the corresponding month last year. The decrease in the number of animals slaughtered was in sheep and lambs, others showing an increase.

Backing up its appeal for further funds, the .Smith Family in its monthly statement sets out that the cost entailed in repairing the boots and shoes of relief workers and their wives is £B5 per month. During the last mouth the output has been increased by 20 per cent. The free milk supply for undernourished children, costing £lOB per month, is still being continued.

The difficulties which have arisen from the presence of a “greasy back” bank at the rear of the new Dwan building in Willis Streets next the Grand Hotel, are being overcome by the erection of a double concrete wall. There will be a space between the two walls, which will be buttressed one against the other, with ample drainage facilities below. In addition, the sloping bank at the back . will be cemented over, in order to prevent any surface soakage during wet weather.

Mr. E. W. Wise, Mayor of Eastbourne. and Mr. W. Fortune, of Upper Hutt Borough, were yesterday welcomed by Mr. H. A. Huggins as new members of the Wellington City and Suburban Water Board. Mr. Huggins and Mr. W. V. Dyer. Hutt County, are now the only remaining original members of the board. Mr. Huggins said there was not much work to do just now. but it was important, as it was the basis of a greater scheme for Wellington and the Hutt Valley, of which the board was the pioneer .
