By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Christchurch, October 12.
Failing to notice a shunting engine which was moving quickly along the wharf at Dyttclton. Averill Dester, a girl, aged 18, jumped from the platform and fell in front of the engine last night just after the departure of the Maori. She had evidently wished to get out of the crowd. The prompt action of the driver and the fireman averted a tragedy. They applied the brakes and brought the engine to a standstill just as it touched the girl. The cowcatcher tore the .heel from one of the girl's shoes, but. beyond slight bruises and shook she is none the worse.
