AMATEUR ATHLETICS

Combined Old Boys’ Club

VERY GOOD START MADE The success which had attended its first year’s activities was favourably commented upon at the annual meeting of the combined Old Boys’ Amateur Athletic Club, held at Wellington College last evening. Colonel R. St. J. Beere presided. The report stated that active members registered with the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association numbered 19 and, in addition, there were 12 attending training who did not register and compete. Although there were only 31 active members, this was considered satisfactory as practically all joined the club direct and did not come from any other clubs. The policy laid down by the committee was that no influence was to be brought to bear on athletes already members of other clubs, but that new recruits should be obtained. Outstanding success in the first year was not expected, but some members had performed with distinction and the club had gained third place in the provincial championships. Special attention had been paid to the junior section and the younger members had performed with credit. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the chairman said the club had made a very good start and one or two members had been very successful. The balance-sheet was in a satisfactory state, a feature being the smallness of tho outgoings. It was to be noted that money had not been wasted on trophies. He thanked Mr. W. A. Armour, headmaster of Wellington College, for the use of the college grounds and other kindnesses he had extended to the club. Mr. Armour, who seconded the motion, said It was very pleasing to see the results achieved by members and the start augured well for the future. If the same enthusiasm were shown the success of the club was assured. It was fine, he said, in these difficult times to see a credit balance, which was a tribute to the bon. treasurer, Father T. Cleary.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to commence training next Tuesday at 5.30 p.m., it being' pointed out that all facilities for field event training and athletics generally were available.

The election of officers resulted as follows Patron, Dr. P. F. McEvedy; president, Colonel R. St. J. Beere; vice-presidents, all last year’s vicepresidents, with the addition of local presidents of old boys’ associations in Wellington, and Messrs. S. Leader, C. G. White, Balthrop, Gilberd and Dr. M.
