Complaints iu connection with the behaviour of certain men. and women who attended the “Baek to Childhood” Ball held in the Town Hall ou August 8 which had been made by a shopkeeper iu business nearby were reported by tho president, Mrs. Hugh Kasper, at the Auckland District Convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union.

Mrs. Kasper said that she had been approached by the shopkeeper concerned, who had asked that §oine action should be taken by the union. “The shopkeeper told me she had witnessed disgraceful scenes on the night of the ball,” Mrs. Kasper said. “She had occasion to order two couples away from her shop on account of their disgraceful behaviour. Four people, one of whom was an elderly woman dressed in rompers, were intoxicated and carried round their necks babies’ feeding bottles containing whisky.

“Another member of the union who attended a meeting in the Salvation Army Hail ou the night of the ball said she saw intoxicated couples drinking in a motor-car.”

A resolution was passed stating that the convention viewed with alarm the disquieting statements relating to drinking nt dances and public functions, especially among girls, and recommending that the city council should be urged to see that adequate supervision was exercised at all such functions, particularly those held in the Town Hall.
