CERCLE FRANCAIS
Interesting Programme Members of the “Cercle Francais” spent an enjoyable evening at their recent reunion, when the arrangements were under the direction of Mrs. M. H. Green. Mrs. W. Hursthouse was hostess. The first half of the programme was as follows:—Pianoforte solos, Mdlle. Raes; causerie, Dr. Carbery, “Chlnoiseries.” A picturesque play in verse, “Le Chapeau Chinoise” (Franc Nohain), occupied the second half. The stage had been beautifully decorated to present a Chinese setting. The back screen was the work of Miss Peggy Pearson, and was much admired. The story of the play concerned the tradition which demanded that the Princess Fansou (Miss K. Hursthouse) must marry the suitor who would succeed in kissing her without tinkling a single bell on a fatal ancestor’s hat. Zouric (Miss Pharazyn), a porcelain mender, is the victor, to the disappointment of Tchang (Mme. de Filippi), and Tchong (Miss C. Smythson). Li. the father (Mrs. Green) Is full of Chinese philosophy and worldly wisdom. Before the play, Mme. Bendall gave a causerie on Franc Mohain and his work.
