REVIVING TRADE
Britain’s Traffic Increase shipyards activity (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, August 31. A material improvement in traffic receipts was recorded by the four main British railway companies. The total earnings for the last week wer.e £119,000 higher than; for. the; corresponding week last year. Raw materials and other goods as well as passengers show an increase, and this is taken as one of the several indications which exist of a steady trade revival. Among the other indications are activity in the Clyde, where seven new vessels have' been ordered, making August the busiest month of the year, the increasing work of blast furnaces causing the erection of new plant by a North Country iron and steel firm, and the renewed activity of welding plant. On the Stock Exchange the markets show a firm tone, and activity has been keen for this time of the year. This is attributed by “The Times” city editor to the fact that less attention is now being given to the vagaries of exchange and the uncertainties of the American situation than to evidences of improvement in,trade outlook and in the statistical position of commodities, coupled with the encouraging home rail traffic returns. It is generally realised, adds “The Times,” that no general restoration of world finance and trade can take place until a common international monetary standard is restored, and exchange restrictions abolished.
