Copyright. The thrifty cook can quite safely use up sour milk for making cakes if carbonate of soda is substituted for l>ak-ing-poicder to counteract the sour taste. It is not generally known that one cupful of sour milk and half a teaspoonful of carbonate of soda have an equivalent raising-power to a cupful of fresh milk and two teaspoons' of bakingpowder. Cream that has gone sour makes excellent scones if carbonate of soda is substituted for baking-powder. A paste made of carbonate of soda and water is effective for removing scorch-marks. Spread the paste on the marks and allow to remain for a couple of hours before washing out. Cheese creamed with a little butter and a few grains of carbonate of soda is delicious on hot toast. Try it!
Despite the many dental creams, it is hard to find a bettor bleaching and cleansing agent than carbonate of soda.
