MOCK APPEAL CASE
Wellington Law Students With Mr. W. W. Perry ou the bench, the Wellington Law Students’ Society held a mock appeal case, in the small courtroom of the Supreme Court, on Friday evening. The’ appellant, Ryegrass, had invited friends to picnics on his land, and the fire which they lighted, becoming out of control by reason of the negligence of the guests, spread and did damage on the land of an adjoining occupier, Hayseed. On the same evening Ryegrass gave permission to a tramper to sleep in his hayloft,, and through the tramper’s negligence in lighting/a cigarette, the hayloft was set on fire, and the outbread also spread and did further damage on Hayseed's property. . In the lower court Ryegrass had been held liable in.damages ou both causes of action, and- be was appealing against this judgment. After an argument, in which the authorieties were fully examined, the appeal was dismissed, Judgment being given in favour of the respondent. Mr. H. W. Dowling, and with him Mr. Connell, appeared for appellant, and for respondent Mr.' Fitzgerald, and with him Mr. Wicks, counsel being complimented by Mr. Perry.
