LIKELY CONTENDER
Baer’s Record in the Ring : WORLD TITLE ASPIRANT . Max Baer, who. jumped into the limelight, by technically knocking out Max Schmeling, ex-heavyweight boxing champion of the world, at New York last week, must be considered a serious contender .for the world’s title. Ho is only 24 years of age, stands. 6ft, 2sln. in height, and.scales 14st. 41b. Baer’s father owns a ranch at Levermore, California, and the young.man . early developed his muscles by tiding I and roping steers, and acting cher’s boy in the retail butchery .his father conducted in the town. After a brief reign as amateur, he joined the professional ranks, and had bad luck early in his ; career, through Frankie Campbell dying after his fight with Baer in the San Francisco ball park on August 27, 1930. He was acquitted by .the courts, and kept on fighting.- Though very crude when he first appeared at Madison Square Garden, New York, Baer had ambition, and -he improved his boxing by going after the- best boxers he could get. “Now I think I know something,” he told an interviewer in New York in April. ' ‘.'Maybe I’m wrong, ’ but I'll Like a chance on it. Just, look over my record for the past year. Why shouldn’t I be champion? Got the size and the speed, haven’t I? I can ' punch and I can take it, and I’m wining to trade.” • " Max Adelbo.rt Baer lived up to his nickname of the “Livermore Larrnper” when he pounded the hardy German to helplessness at New York last week. Jack Sharkey, the world’s champion, will have a problem on his hands if he manages to come through the forthcoming battle with Primo Camera, the Italian giant.
