CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

Club Tourney Commences

WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND

The annual 20-board fixture between the Auckland and Wellington clubs was begun on Saturday evening, simultaneously with the match between the Otago and Canterbury clubs. The very thorough attention given to preliminaries by the two honorary secretaries, Messrs. R, A. Godtschalk and R. E. Raeyertz, enabled an exceptionally prompt start to be made •with the play, the first moves being exchanged a few minutes after 6.30 p.m. The operating at this end was once more in the capable hands of Mr. W. Kennedy. Very good progress was made with the various games, thanks in a great measure to the efficient services of the two umpires (Dr. D. F. Myers and Mr. C. 11. Black), and the local scrutineers (Messrs. Emery, McCall, Risberg, Hague and Dr. Myers), whoso vigilance' prevented any of those clerical errors that often cause vexatious delays in telegraphic contests/., .! No clocks were used, the two clubs relying.'on a “gentleman’s agreement” to ‘.‘stir up” players at whose -boards play .was proceeding too slowly. The ordinary. English, notation was used’, in preference to the -numerical system known as the 'Kieseritzky-Roll notation. The Auckland club won the toss, and' thiis/hnd first move at the odd-numbered-rboards,'. A-Miller...are missing from ..the Auckland team. As Messrs. W. E. Mason and J. G. McCrea are both on a visit to Auckland, the games at boards 4 and 10 were:played over the board. The result of the bout between Messrs. Mason and Pullen-Burry is not yet known here as it was played in a private house. Of , the'remaining 19 games, 13 are left in a very even state. The Wellington club has the advantage at boards 8, 14, 15, 18, and'l9,'. while the position at board 9 slightly favours Auckland. Many of the .games -have reached an advanced stage and consequently spectators should witness some instructive and interesting end'game play when .the contest is resumed on Saturday evening. The winner of this match is to play an inter-island final against the winner of the Otago v. Canterbury fixture on Joly 24 and 31. Wellington League The third round of B grade fixtures was completed last week, when the Miramar team continued its victorious career, defeating Ngaio by 5 games to 1. Wadestown won from Victoria University College by 2 games (4-2) after a hard fight. In the remaining contest, Hutt Valley has scored 8 games to Karori’s 2, and the result, therefore, depends on the issue of an unfinished game, which requires a second sitting.
