STRUCK BY ENGINE
81-Year-old Man Killed NEW PLYMOUTH NATALITY By Telegraph.—Press Association. New Plymouth, June 12. Struck by an engine at Weymouth Street crossing at 1.30 p.m., Robert Hyde Mace, aged 81, a New Plymouth resident, died in hospital at 4.15 this afternoon. His right leg was severed above the ankle and his left leg bruised. Shock caused his death. Mr. Mace apparently came from Kawaroa Park, which is alongside the railway, and crossed in front of an engine proceeding from the Morley Street sheds to the station to draw the midday express to Wanganui. It is stated that the engine whistle was sounded, but Mr. Mace was rather deaf and apparently did not hear the warning and walked on to the crossing. The engine, which was of an A.B. type, was travelling slowly and after the accident stopped within 50. feet of the downward of the down ward grade. The crossing is not regarded as a dangerous one.
