STRATFORD ELECTION

Rival Candidates to Have Straight Contest GREAT INTEREST IN POLL Dominion Special Service. Stratford, June 12. Nominations closed to-day for the mayoralty by-election necessitated by the recent successful petition. The nominees are the previous candidates, Messrs. J. W. McMillan and Percy Thomson. The election will be held < - i June 2:1. A straight-out contest between Mr. Thomson and Mr. McMillan in the mayoral election, arising from the recent magisterial decision, was unexpected, as Mr. Charles Finnerty, a member of the borough council, an unsuccessful candidate for the mayoralty on three previous occasions had announced his probable intention of accepting nomination, saying that there was a widespread desire for an independent candidate. Mr. Finnerty alleged that as a result of the economy policy adopted borough operations were somewhat at a standstill and pointed out that the estimates for tlie coming year had not yet been framed. However, he decided at the last minute not to stand.

The greatest interest in the history of Stratford municipal politics is being taken in the poll. The f.?ct that there is to be no supplementary roil came as a shock to mauy electors. Since the magistrate declared the election void more than 200 applications for enrolment have been received but declined. Only 1296 votes were cast in the previous election, though 2440 names are on the rolls.
