Otago Resists Wellington Soccer Challenge GOOD WORK BY GOALIE By Telegraph.—Frees Association. ’ Dunedin, June 10. Wellington’s challenge match against Otago for the F.A. Trophy was played in the presence of 2500 and under excellent weather conditions, save that Wellington had the disadvantage of the sun. The visitors played attractive football, but Otago’s faculty for seizing opportunities and McDougall’s brilliant goalkeeping,’ resulted in Otago retaining the trophv, winning by five goals to four. Wellington advanced early, and within two minutes McLeod drove low into liie net Otago replied immediately. McCormack shot and Hooper smothered McVean’s return, equalising. Campbell was injured and was carried off. From a wellplaced corner by Witchall Hooper beaded a second goal for Otago.. Bright play enabled Porter to direct to McVean.and Skinner, receiving, banged past McVean. Otago 3. Wellington 1. _ Campbell returned to the field, and the visitors immediately tested McDougall, ■who turned a shot from Cunningham round the goal in the nick of time. The visitors continued to be aggressive, and from midfield clever combined play enabled McLeod to score. Otago 3, Wellington 2. After twenty minutes ot play the visitors were showing superior combination. A corner kick by Craig went behind, but a subsequent nice cross from his foot went close to Cunningham, who broke clean through, but slipped. Otago swung back and attacked for some time, but found the defence impenetrable. A hot attack on Otago’s goal opened the second half. McDougall held two drives from James, and cleared two- cor-: ners, but had no chance when Cunningham received from McLeod and found the net. making the scores 3-all. Back swept Otago. McVean turned over the bar a shot from Witchall. but from the resultant corner kick Hooper headed through again. A minute_ later Hooper missed by inches. Wellington flashed back, and Janies found the net, but was ruled off-side. Again the visitors were defending, and Witchall goaled from a cross by Skinner. Otago 5, Wellington 3. A hot assault was made on the home goal, McDougall dealing with dangerous drives from Jeffery and McLeod, and making several brilliant and spectacular saves. Just on time Campbell scored from a penalty kick, .the game ending: Otago 5, Wellington 4.
