FIRST DIVISION TABLE

WIN FOR WATERSIDE Fast and Interesting Game In a fast and interesting game at the Basin Reserve, Waterside beat by six goals to three. Swifts .were the first to score as a result of excellent forward work, and in the first half-hour Waterside were not in the picture so far as attack was concerned. The Swifts forwards* passing was beautifully done, and but for the work of Shipp in the Waterside goal, Swifts would have been two or three goals up. Spectators were surprised at the wellexecuted movements by the Swifts halves and forwards, in which Hawken was prominent. Time and again he dropped the ball in front of goal, and the inside men in their eagerness to score sent wide or straight at the goalie, who saved anything that came to him. Then Hawken tricked Abernethy, sped down the wing, touched to Bilby, and then on to Adams, who put the ball just inside the post out of Shipp’s reach. Only an occasional breakaway marked the Waterside team’s play until a quarter of an hour froili the interval. Dunsmuir and Patterson led the attack and Bradford became busy. He saved one shot, and the ball sped_quickly from one player to another till it reached James, and, with a first-timer, he found the net, a surprise goal which was not the result of concerted effort. Two minutes later the play developed along. the same lines, and Janies added number two in much the same way. In the remaining period up to half-time Waterside showed the ascendancy, and at the whistle the score was 2-1. ■ In the second half Waterside asserted themselves, and. for a while Swifts were . quite a different team. They played too closely, and the Waterside men frequent-., ly broke up: their efforts. Adams then came in with a clever side-step, beat Guest, slipped the ball to Kelly, and a hard swerving shot put Swifts level. Waterside then took advantage of the close game’that Swifts had adopted without success. A lovely run down the wing by Dunsmuir ended in a cross which enabled Millar to net. 3-2. , Dunsmuir initiated the move which enabled Longbottom to touch to McLeod in front of goal, and Bradford was beaten again. 4-2. This reverse rather disheartened Swifts, and Waterside had matters more their own way. A. sixth goal came through McLeod, but in the concluding stages Swifts gave a flash of their former tactics, and, forcing, a corner, converted the flag kick, making the final score 6-3 in favour of Waterside. Mr. J. Graham was the referee. SURPRISE OF SEASON Hospital’s Defeat by Hutt The greatest surprise of the season was. Hutt’s victory over Hospital, at Hospital, by 2 goals to 1. Jeffery and Miles were away from the Hospital team, and their absence was keenly felt. Hutt kicked off, and rushed play downfield, McGrath just missing with a good shot. Another attack following a throwin was launched by Hutt, but this time' a stubborn defence was encountered. Severalcorners were given to both sides, but no goals resulted. A stinging shot by Nicolle was nicely saved by Ell, ami a free-kick against. Hutt for hands saw H. Trewiek go close to scoring. Thompson was playing well, and Ell also was doing good service. Hospital lost a certain goal when Windley shot over the-bar instead of passing to Marshall, who was unmarked. At half-time neither side had scored. Batchelor made a fine solo effort for Hutt upon resuming, but Thompson tackled him in the act of shooting. Hutt at this stage were doing a great deal of pressing. A great, save was effected by Greenwood, and then Nicolle, who had only the goalie to beat, sent the ball over the bar. Hospital forced a corner, which was nicely taken by Marshall, and H. Trewick headed into the net. Hospital 1, Hutt 0. The game became faster after this, and McGrath made the score 1-all by beating Ell with a high dropping shot. Stobbs.put Hutt in the lead with a shot similar to McGrath's, and the game ended : Hutt 2. Hospital 1. The referee was Mr. J. Sanderson. ’“’VICTORY TO MARIST Technical Not Experienced Unsatisfactory combination and a good deal of miskicking, especially during the first half, were factors which tended io spoil the game between Marist and Technical Old Boys at the Basin Reserve. Marist’s win by two goals to nil was quite a good movement, considering that positions from the goal to the centre-forward had to be filled by players mostly from lower divisions. Technical's defeat was almost entirely due to their inexperience. When Marist had kicked off, and after an attack started on Technical’s right wing, in which miskicking and bad passing were features. Bird opened out to Lyons, who flashed the, ball to J. Condon on the right. The winger crossed it beautifully, but neither Lyons nor Marshmen t could get nt it in time. Bognuda sent the ball to the line in stopping an , attack, and a neat piece of passing ensued from the throw-in. Yancy sent to Bird.

who lifted into the centre, and Marshment headed accurately at goal. Although Ogg saved partially, Marshment was on him in a flash, and found the net. A long shot by Bird from out of a ruck was’neatly saved by Ogg,-and after one weak attempt by Condon, the winger sent in another, which grazed the crossbar. Pullen changed the venue of play when he raced upfield and passed on hard to Stewart, but Laracy and Duffy were equal to the occasion, and a minute later Ogg was showered with shots from the Marist forwards. Through holding on too long Laracy bad the ball taken from him, and Stewart received to run in and drive a hard one at Wickliffe, who managed to . throw the ball clear, ’ Technical had an excellent chance to score when the ball crossed and recrossed the goal-mouth, but a dozen feet failed, to connect. Before half-time, Condon slipped the ball to Kershaw, who found the net, but from an offside position. At the change-over Marist led by one goal. Early exchanges in the second half were of a scrappy nature, and a greasy turf was of no assistance to players in keeping their feet. A thrill was provided when Liddieoat took the ball half the length of the field, and shot beautifully at goal. In saving the shot Wickliffe lost his footing, but as the ball was going over his head he reached up and fisted clear. It was a smart save. Marist’s second goal came as a surprise. Bird, at half-way, passed to Condon, who whipped the ball into the centre for Lyons to head into the net. Ogg appeared to make no effort to save, and it was not until the referee pointed to the centre of the field that the crowd knew a goal had ■been scored.
