RED CROSS WORKERS

■ Cafeteria at the Hospital A social evening in aid of the Red Cross cafeteria at the Wellington Hospital was held at the Red Cross rooms' on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Galloway, secretary of the Red Cross Society, was present, and expressed gratification at the large attendance. For the information of those present, he briefly outlined the valuable work which members of the cafeteria were doing on behalf of out-patients attending for treatment at the General Hospital. Each day the ladies presented themselves for duty, serving light refreshment, which was greatly appreciated by the patients. .The Hospital Board, through its secretary, from time to time emphasises the valuable work which is being done. The cafeteria was opened in 1928, and originally threepence was charged to those able to pay for the refreshment given. Since the depression had made itself felt this charge had been withdrawn and the service provided free, those desiring to do so making a donation. In spite of this change, the revenue from the venture was being well maintained, evidence of the extent to which it is appreciated. Such profits as are made are devoted to the promotion of the welfare of the patients. Since the cafeteria started the sum of £BO has been handed over to the Wellington Hospital as a contribution to the maintenance of wireless equipment.

Admission to the afternoon was obtained by means of the contribution of some commodity used in the work of the cafeteria, or by a donation. Many parcels of useful articles were received. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. L. H. Angus and Miss Susie Eagar, honorary secretary to the cafeteria, who were ably assisted by Mesdames Hendry (president, Red Cross Ladies’ Auxiliary), Grant, Lark, Waite, ■Wilson, Downes, and Hill. Various competitions were entered into. An excellent programme was provided, those assisting being Miss Finch (pianist), Mrs. O'Neill, Miss D. Seymour, Miss Newman, Mrs. Cashman, Messrs. A. J. Poverty, M. 11. Perry, Master lan Galloway.

Thanks were expressed to Messrs Chas. Begg and Co. for arranging for Miss Spinks to provide pianoforte music.

The afternoon was successful in every particular, and will help materially in furthering the work of the cafeteria.
