PAYMENTS FOR RELIEF

.Requests by Unemployed Palmerston North. June 10. Seeking an increase in the relief payments, a large deputation of Palmerston North unemployed waited on the Inspector of Labour, Mr. W. 11. Cadwallader, this morning. The first speaker. Mr. F. Lee, said the relief workers were not receiving sufficient for the _ sustenance of themselves and their families. Mr. C. J. Mandeno said the workers’ demands were for 5/- for adults and 3/additional for children, plus full allocations for the winter months. They also demanded that, during the wet weather they should be paid for a full day instead of being obliged to spend a considerable portion of the day under damp conditions.' perhaps with inadequate shelter. They also demanded that the Unemployment Board, should give consideration to the question of evictions, which were becoming too frequent. Mr. Cadwallader undertook to submit the deputations’ demands to the Unemployment Board with a recommendation that they be given consideration. He gave an assurance that no steps had been taken at this centre to force married men to go into camps.
