WAIRARAPA GAMES

Greytown-Red Star Match Dost inion Special Service. Masterton, June 11. Beautifully fine weather conditions favoured footballers in the Wairarapa. on Saturday, when the Rugby Union’s championship competitions were resumed after a break of a week owing to representative matches. Chief interest centred on the clash between Greytown, the leaders in this year’s championship, and Red Star, last year’s winners, which was played at Memorial Park. Greytown may be considered more than a trifle lucky, to win by the narrow margin of one point. At Carterton, Dalefield defeated Gladstone, and at Featherston the home. team gained a victory over Old Boys, while at Martinborough the Carterton fifteen, outclassed Martinborougb. Greytown is st present at the head of the championship ladder with 11 points, with Carterton. Dalefield and Featherston next with 8 points each. Gladstone is one point behind. and then eome Martinborough 4, Old Boys and Red Star 1 each, arid Masterton nil. There are, however, still three more games to be played in the first round, so that, there is every possibility that the position may be altered before the round is completed.

High School 14, Red Star 3. Masterton 6, Mauriceville 3. Fourth Grade. Carterton 39, Masterton 0. Greytown 14, High School 6. Grey town’s Lucky Win The match at Memorial Park between Greytown and Red Star, attracted the largest crowd so far this season. The visiting team scored rather a lucky win by 10 points to 9. The game was fast and interesting, the second spell 'in particular being full of bright incidents. Red Star dominated play for fully twothirds of the game, and only bad luck prevented them from scoring on several occasions. The home team was the more resourceful combination, but it lacked the stern defence that marked the display of its opponents. Both sides favoured the open style of play, and threw the ball about with delightful abandon. Good displays were given by both sets of forwards, Red Star standing the pace better. Stars were the first to score, F. Clarke landing a penalty goal with play in progress about three minutes. Greytown evened up when Stringfellow sent Swanson across. Bouzaid missed the kick. Stars’ next try came from a beautiful back movement, the whole chain handling for the winger, Johnson, to score. F. Clarke missed the kick. Greytown equalised just before halftime, when P. Jury worked his way across. Bouzaid failed to convert. Immediately after resumption Bouzaid secured and potted a splendid goal, putting Greytown four points up. Shortly’ afterwards McCarthy raced away to send B. Clarke across. B. Clarke missed the kick. Stars were on top for the remainder of the spell, but their efforts were unrewarded. Mr. H. J. McKenzie was the referee. A Hard-fought Game More cohesion between the back and forward divisions enabled Dalefield to score a victory over Gladstone by 38 pointe to 11. at the Carterton Showgrounds. The game was decidedly hard fought, and was played at a fast pace throughout. Neither team produced anything like its best form, and consequently the standard of play was at no sitage particularly high. If anything, the Gladstone rearguard was a superior combination to that of the opposing backline, but with the Dalefield forwards getting far more than their fair share of the ball from the scrums and line-outa, the opportunities afforded the visiting backs were very limited. Dalefield, with their pack working well, held a territorial advantage practically throughout the game, and the Gladstone defence was called on to stand up to a severe buffeting. The team performed its part with credit, however, and many likely-looking tried were averted. Tries were scored for the winners by Woodill, Ashton and Cleland. Ashton converted one of the tries, and kicked a penalty goal, and C. Jansen kicked a field goal. For Gladstone L. Booth, McKay and Warne scored tries, one of which was concerted by McKay. Mr. W. Grantham was the referee. A Win for Featherston Playing at Featherston the home team defeated Old Boys by 31 points to 3, after a fairly evenly-contested game. The Old Boys forwards went particularly well, and outclassed Featherston, but the visitors’ rearguard was weak owing to it being badly disorganised. The Featherston backs played quite well, particularly in the second session. In the first spell, which ended with the score at three all, J. Hemi kicked a penalty goal for Featherston, and L. Roach kicked one for Old Boys. The visitors did not add to their score in the second half, while Cook and Strange scored tries for Featherston, and Hemi converted one. Mr. H. Matson was the referee. Martinborough Outclassed The Carterton fifteen proved too strong for Martinborough, defeating them by 24 points to 8, on the Martinborough ground. With their backline functioning well and the forwards putting in a lot of hard work, Carterton found little difficulty in accounting for the homo team, which lacked the combination displayed by the visitors. Mr. J. Blako was the referee.
