A Labour Deputation NEW RAILWAY STATION The renovating of a number of Government buildings and the construction of the new Wellington railway station were public works that might be put in hand it was suggested by a deputation from the ■ Wellington Trades and Labour Council which waited upon the Minister of Public Works, Hon. J. Bitchener. The Minister promised to investigate the points made by the deputation. . , , , , , The deputation, which included Messrs. F. Cornwell, secretary of the council, J. Moulton, secretary of the Carpenters’ Union, Thompson, secretary of the Plumbers’ Union,, and Shannon, secretary of the Painters Union, was introduced by Mr. PFraser, M.P., who stated that the requests to be made bad the support of the Labour members of Parliament of the Wellington district. The speakers urged that the Public Works Department should put in hand the renovating of a number of Government buildings which were In urgent need of repair. This work, which should be done at standard rates of nnv. would give employment to a large number of men. It was also suggested that the new Wellington railway station should be proceeded with on the same lines as the National Museum and Art Gallery. Protests were made against the low rates of pay for tiade>nien in the Public Works Department In reply, the Minister said he wu> grateful for the clear and helpful way in which the deputation bad put their proposals. Some of the points raised wore new to him and he would investigate them. The suggestion that the new Wellington railway station should be constructed was one worthy of consideration.
