ACCESS DIFFICULTY
Hold-up Affects 60 Men i NATIONAL GALLERY SITE j Construction work on the National .Art Gallery and Dominion Museum building is still held up and -10 men have been put off owing to failure to reach an agreement regarding access to the site. Directly and indirectly GO wage-oarners are affected by the holdup. The question of provision of access to the building has been raised by the contractors, who consider that the present roadway from Buckle Street to the working site is inadequate for their purposes. In addition to the present steeply-graded roadway the contractors have asked for a second means of acci'ss on the other side of the tower. The roadway is provided for on the plans of the site, but it, is partially blocked by an old wooden residence, which makes it, impracticable for use I by heavy traffic. It was found that during the past ! week transport sufficient to keep the men on the site continually engaged could not be provided by tlie existing route. Thus, in addition to the constructing employees being put off, lorry drivers and others are not required.' The contractors contend that they could add considerably to the number of men working on the building if adequate access were made available.
