INFLATION TIDE

Intentions of Canada MR. BENNETT’S POSITION Ottawa, May 2. An observation the Prime Minister (Mr. R. B. Bennett) interjected during a speech on general financial matters, forecasting a measure to be introduced shortly respecting money, was not to be taken as an indication that the Government contemplated any departure from the principle of sound money, it was learned authoritatively on Tuesday, though the exact nature of the proposed legislation was not made public. On the question of inflation or devaluation of the dollar, however, it has been stated in reliable quarters, that should this be desirable and possible of accomplishment under circumstances that would not impair the credit of Canada abroad, the Prime Minister would not hesitate to ask the necessary authority from Parliament. It largely depended on the action President Roosevelt would take under the powers granted him.
