Palmerston Election Methods Palmerston North, May 3. Il is understood that a protest to the ■Wanganui Education Board is likely to be made by some of the defeated candidates for election to the I‘almerstou North Central School Committee, against the methods followed at tlie annual election. The question at issue, it is stated, is the validity of the printed lists of nominations used at the ballot on which crosses were placed marking the names of the sitting members seeking re-eleetiou. .Similar action, it is understood, is being taken by the defeated Labour candidates at the Terrace End School. WOMEN OBJECT Taxation and Pensions Palmerston North, May 3. The following resolutions were passed at a meeting of the executive of the Women’s Christian Temperance Unions of the Manawatu district: — “That the attention of the Government be drawn to the iniquitous handicap imposed upon women of' small means by requiring the payment of the unemployment tax upon inconicsjff over £2O, and that an exemption of £52 be suggested. “That (he Government be urged to restore the 2/6 a week which is being deducted from the old age pensions. “That the W.C.T.U. undertake an investigation of cinemn picture programmes and prepare data with a view to bringing about tin improvement in tlie tone of moving picture programmes. “That the convention rcntlirms the necessity for establishing public boards of control in connection with neural hospitals. “That a vigorous protest be made against the loan of £SW> from rhe Unemployment Board's funds to assist in rebuilding a Napier hotel."
