MAYORALTY POPULAR Many Hutt Candidates The popularity of the mayoral chair was emphasised by the number of mayoral candidates in the Hutt Valley. Altogether, twelve candidates contested the mayoralties of the four local bodies in the Hutt Valley. Lower Hutt headed the list with a total of four candidates. A member of the old council, Mr. A. Mcßain, stood with his “progressive ticket,” many members of which also served on the old council. Announced as “The People’s Candidate,” Mr. J. W. Andrews sought election on a sound business training, and was unsupported by any “ticket.” Mayoral honours were also contested by Mr. A. _ Avery (“independent workers’ candidate”), and Mr. J. B. Young ("workers’ ticket”).

Three candidates stood for election at Petone. Mr. D. McKenzie and Mr. J. W. McEwan, both of whom had served as mayor, stood for election, and Mr. J. Findlay was supported by the “Civic League ticket.”

Mayoral honours were contested by three candidates at Upper Hutt—Messrs. A. J. .McCurdy, P. Robertson, and J.

Blewman, all of whom had had local body experience. Eastbourne electors had to choose from Mr. S. F. Fisher and Mr. E. W. Wise, both of whom were members of the previous council. CONDITIONS BROKEN Probationer Before Court “This man has been most unsatisfactory, and it is quite evident that he has paid no attention to the terms of his probation,” said Detective IV. McLennan, in the Lower Hutt Police Court yesterday, when charging Leslie Robert Gray with committing a breach of his probation order. A plea of guilty was entered by Mr. G. Findlay on behalf of defendant, and the magistrate, Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., extended the term of probation for six months. ' “If you do not report, now you will get imprisonment,” he warned defendant. Detective McLennan said that Gray had previously been convicted of the theft of £3B/19/9. and had been admitted to probation for 12 months, with the provision that he should report and pay 30/- once a month. He had paid only £0 •n date, and on every occasion, when he should have reported, a constable had to be sent to find him. Detective McLennan asked that defendant be dealt with on the original charge. Mr. Findlay submitted that the breach of probation was almost entirely a technical one. Defendant had reported on 14 different occasions, and had been under the eyes of the police at Petone during the whole of the year. The real breach, considered counsel, was defendant's failure to pay the money, bnt he had been out of work, and therefore unable to pay more HARRIER ACTIVITY The Hutt Valley harriers held their run from the Hutt Park on Saturday, thirty members attending. A trail of about six miles was laid by A. Clark and A. Henderson, assisted by the colts T. Walker and G. Jones. The course taken was one lap of the championship course as far as the railway workshops, then through Elizabeth Street to the stopbank, to cross the Hutt River via the railway bridge. At Gear Island a detour was then made of the Shandon golf links to gain the pipe bridge back to the park. A handicap run-in over 400 yards wns held, M. Patterson being the winner, with Millman second, and Porter third. Next Saturday the run in preparation for the Novice Handicap will be. held from the Hutt Park club-room. All four boroughs in the Hutt Valley have a keen following of mayoral candidates. Three are seeking election at Petone, four at Lower Hutt, three at Upper Hutt, and two at Eastbourne. Nominations for borough councils are also largo. There are 19 at Petone, 17 at Lower Hutt, 15 at Upper Hutt, and IS nt Eastbourne.
