Y.M.C.A. NEEDS

Mayor Opens May Fair A one-dav May fair was held in the Concert Chamber yesterday afternoon and evening in aid of the funds of the Y.M.C.A. , Mr lv H. Ninimo. president, in wcicoming itis Worship the Mayor, Mr. T. C A. Hislop, and other guests, said that funds were sorely needed by the association at the present time. They had held off making any general appeal to the public for funds because so many other urgent appeals were being made; not that the Y.M.C.A. was less deserving, for indeed it played a vital part in the life of the community, a fact that was recognised by the Government and the public. One of its "Teat works was to build character in their boys and young men, an important service in view of the inclination to drift largely due to unemployment. One of the brightest spots in the recent work of the Y.M.C.A. was its work in conjunction with a citizens committee for the employment of boys, ahe committee had succeeded in placing over 600 boys last year, and this year it had found jobs for 360 boys The directors heartily appreciated the work that was being done by the two ladies, auxiliaries, under the direction of Mrs. Quinton, so much of which was due o her dynamic energy and overwhelming enthusiasm. . , The Mayor, in declaring the iair open, said it was still another effort by Mrs. Quinton, one of many he knew, and he wished to thank her foi the public-spirited work she had done during the last two years. Like other organisations the Y.M.C.A. was in real need of assistance. The association had made every effort to keep expenses down. Its officers had voluntarily reduced their salaries by 40 per cent. Tie. did not know of any others who had made a greater sacrifice voluntarily. He congratulated nil who had assisted in providing for and attending to the stalls. and hoped the fair would yield a good return to this most deserving, well-established, and essential institution. He then declared the fair open. r rhe stalls were quite comfortably arranged round the hall, and lines of bunting nave the Concert Chamber a gala appearance. Good business was done, afternoon and evening.
