There is consternation in Jugoslavia owing to the heavy sentence of three years’ imprisonment on Dr. Vladimir Matcbek, leader of three million Croats, on a charge of conspiring to procure the partition of the Jugoslav Kingdom. . Opposition circles are atraid tliat the Croats will now abandon peaceful efforts to improve the situation in favour of violence. Dr. Matchek is charged with signingl a manifesto known as the Zagreb Resolutions, advocating an independent. Croatia outside Jugoslavia, also with giving interviews to British and other newspapers expressing the same views, the accuracy of which he denies. He also denies Mint he wanted to leave Jugoslavia;- he only wants liberty within its borders and the revision of the Constitution. Dr. Valdimir Mntchck was arrested ou a similar charge Inst. October, but was afterwards released.
