OBITUARY

Mr. Thomas Cargill The death was announced by private cable on Saturday of Mr. Thomas Cargill, who was formally a marine engineer in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd. The late Mr. Cargill was born in Bi’minghain on November I,ISGO, and joined the company’s service in December. 1883, as fourth engineer of the Waihora. De subsequently served as chief engineer in a number of the vessels of tae Heel, including the Wareatea, \Vakatipu, Pateena, Paloona, Mokoja, and Monowai. He retired from the service in December, 1923, and since that dale had lived at Believieu. Hobart, Tasmania. The late Mr. Cargill’s association with the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers dates back to 1884. Mrs. Bessie Penney The death occurred at her residence. Perry Street. Masterton, on Sunday, ol Miss Bessie Penney, at the age. of -J--years states a “Dominion Special SeiVice message. Miss Penney, who wis the second daughter of the late Rev. Chalies and Mrs. Penney, of Blenheim, was an ardent member of the Masterton Methodist Church. She had resided in Masteiton for the past twelve rears, puoi to that living in Blenheim. The late Mr. Harlen. who was in his tiltysecond year, took ill on April -4. Mr. Harlen entered the Kajori Borough Council’s service in 1905. About the time that part of the Karori Borough amalgamated with the city he was transferred to the city engineer’s depart men.t In 1917 he was appointed a district overseer, a position which he held until 1924, when he was appointed officer in charge of cemeteries. Mr. Harlen leaves a widow and two daughters.
